  • Dent, Fish book spots in Atlanta quarterfinals

    7/22/10 7:03 AM | Ricky Dimon
Dent, Fish book spots in Atlanta quarterfinals Americans are four for four so far in booking quarterfinal spots at the Atlanta Tennis championships. Taylor Dent and Mardy Fish earned two of the sports with hard-fought victories on Wednesday.

Taylor Dent upset Horacio Zeballos 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the second round of the Atlanta Tennis Championships on Wednesday afternoon. Dent recovered from a tough first set to blow past Zeballos in one hour and 36 minutes.

The match was Dent's to win or lose right from the start, but he served at a disastrous 21 percent in the first set to all but hand his opponent a one-set advantage. The 94th-ranked American also double-faulted six times.

From there, however, Dent took advantage of the fast conditions and dominated Zeballos. The fourth-seeded Argentine won a mere two games the entire rest of the way, including none in a third set during which he hardly pretended to try. Dent finished with four aces and nine doubles, but he had more than enough weapons from the baseline to dismiss a disinterested world No. 47.

Next up for Dent is countryman Mardy Fish, who ousted Atlanta's own Robby Ginepri 6-1, 7-5 in the nightcap. Fish, who recently won an ATP title in Newport, advanced to the quarterfinals after one hour and 29 minutes of play.

A routine first set saw Fish race to a 3-0 advantage before cruising with two breaks to a 6-1 victory. The world No. 49 dropped only three points on serve and won all 10 of his first-serve points.

Ginepri fought back in the second, but he squandered all six of his break chances. One of those came with Fish down set point at 4-5 and Ginepri had an easy look at a forehand pass to force a third set. Fish, however, guessed where Ginepri was going and nailed a forehand volley winner. Atlanta's No. 6 seed went on to hold, and two games later the match was over.

Dent and Fish joined fellow Americans John Isner and Michael Russell in the last eight. Isner outlasted Gilles Muller in a third-set tiebreaker and Russell edged Rainer Schuettler 7-5 in the third.
