    Hamburg - Almagro, Hanescu fall in opening round Fifth seed Nicolas Almagro and 12th seed Victor Hanescu failed to reach the round of 16 at the International German Open on Sunday. The players fell to respective opponents Denis Istomin and wildcard Julian Reister.

    Denis Istomin came out on the winning end of a close second-round clash with Swedish Open champion Nicolas Almagro on Wednesday. The world No. 59 held 11 of 12 service games en route to the two tie-break victory in one hour and 59 minutes. Istomin, who improved his 2010 season record to 19-14, completed the afternoon with 9 aces and 82% of his first-service points won.

    The 23-year-old will battle wildcard Julian Reister for a place in the quarterfinal.

    Wildcard Julian Reister upended 12th seed Victor Hanescu after one hour and 39 minutes of play on Wednesday. Hanescu endured a difficult serving day, unable to capture more than 38% of his second-service points. The German, ranked world No. 121, ended the day with four aces and 34 of 45 first-serve points secured.
