  • Davydenko headlines field in Hamburg

Davydenko headlines field in Hamburg Defending champion Nikolay Davydenko makes his return to clay-court competition at the International German Open Hamburg this week. The 29-year-old Russian enters the ATP World Tour 500 event as the top seed.

World No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko will be making his return to ATP World Tour play after suffering an opening-round defeat to Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in Stuttgart.

Davydenko commences the tournament with a 17-6 record, bolstered by a run to the Doha championship in January (def. Nadal). The 29-year-old has struggled as of late, unable to secure back-to-back matches since sustaining a broken wrist in mid March.

The Russian, who captured the 2009 title over Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, is taking part in his eighth International German Open Hamburg.

With most of the top 10 continuing their rest period before the Masters 1000 Toronto, Davydenko leads a formidable field of seeded players which includes: David Ferrer, Jurgen Melzer, Gael Monfils, Nicolas Almagro, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Thomaz Bellucci and Albert Montanes.

The World No. 6 tops a difficult half of the draw that hosts fourth seed Monfils, fifth seed Almagro, sixth seed Ferrero, ninth seed Gilles Simon, 12th seed Victor Hanescu, 14th seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and 15th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.

After an opening-round bye, Davydenko plays either Frenchman Florent Serra or Evgeny Korolev of Kazakhstan. The nearest seed in the Russian’s quarter of the draw is Garcia-Lopez, who looks to be a likely opponent in the round of 16. Should Davydenko progress through the early rounds, 2010 Swedish Open champion Nicolas Almagro looms as a probable quarterfinal challenger.
