With one last nod to the clay season, the tournament in Hamburg kicked off on Monday with Simone Bolelli and Jeremy Chardy advancing.
Simone Bolelli def. Simon Greul 7-6(4), 7-6(4)
This was a tough match for Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Simon Greul of Germany. The first round match went nearly 2 hours and was decided with a pair of tiebreakers. The first set progressed without a service break. Bolelli fought off the only break point against him and Greul was not in danger on his serve at all in the set. Bolelli just edged out the German 7-4 to take the one set lead.
The second set was more eventful, with both men securing a service break to force yet another tiebreaker, which Bolelli again won. The Italian will take on No. 7 seed Thomaz Bellucci in the second round.
Jeremy Chardy def. Marco Chiudinelli 6-4, 6-1
France’s Jeremy Chardy had a convincing win over Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli on Monday. The first round match lasted just over one hour, with Chardy winning nearly 60% of the points in the match. The first set was decided by a single service break for the Frenchman. The match quickly got away from Chiudinelli after he lost the opening set. Chardy went 3 for 3 on break point chances, and he left the Swiss man with just a single game to show for his efforts.
Chardy will take on Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round.
