  • Top U.S. players Roddick, Isner kick off U.S. Open Series

    7/18/10 8:38 PM | Ricky Dimon
Top U.S. players Roddick, Isner kick off U.S. Open Series The 2010 U.S. Open Series gets underway on Monday with the Atlanta Tennis Championships. Andy Roddick and John Isner headlines a field that also includes Lleyton Hewitt.

Tennis is back in Atlanta for the first time in nine years. The Indianapolis event, which had always kicked off the summer hard-court season since the origination of the U.S. Open Series, has moved south and is now the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Also back in Atlanta is Andy Roddick, who prevailed the last time a tournament was held there (2001 when the AT&T Challenge was held on clay). That was Roddick's first career ATP title and he is favored to triumph again after just recently entering with a wild card.

The seventh-ranked American, however, should have plenty of competition in the form of countrymen. John Isner, of new-found Wimbledon fame, is the No. 2 seed and has a first-round bye along with Roddick, third-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, and No. 4 seed Horacio Zeballos.

Other Americans in the draw include James Blake and Taylor Dent, who will be squaring off against each other in a tough opening-round matchup. Newport champion Mardy Fish could meet Blake or Dent in the quarters before a potential semifinal clash against Roddick. Donald Young opens against Dudi Sela and Michael Russell will kick off his campaign against No. 8 seed Benjamin Becker.

Also in the seeded crop of players are No. 5 Janko Tipsarevic and No. 7 Xavier Malisse. Malisse finished runner-up to Roddick at the 2001 Atlanta tournament and a rematch could be on this week's quarterfinal menu.
