Gael Monfils and Albert Montanes are through to the Suttgart title match. They score semifinal wins on Saturday over Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Juan Carlos Ferrero, respectively.
Gael Monfils booked a spot in his 10th ATP final on Saturday, knocking out Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the Mercedes Cup semifinals. Monfils needed one hour and 52 minutes to end the impressive run by his opponent, who was making his first ATP semifinal appearance.
Despite surrendering the first break of the match at 4-5 in the first set, Gimeno-Traver bounced back in the second. Amazingly, the 88th-ranked Spaniard won only four return points in set two, but all four came in the same game and that allowed him to break. Nonetheless, Monfils woke up and blitzed Gimeno-Traver 6-0 in the final frame of play.
"Daniel was playing with a lot of spin and when he played it back behind me it was tough to adjust my step, but I tried to make him play a lot of backhands," explained the Frenchman. "The third set was quicker, but I think he was struggling a bit physically."
Next up for Monfils is Albert Montanes, who dismissed fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 7-6(6). After one hour and 42 minutes culminated by a tense tiebreaker, Montanes reached his ninth career title match.
The 30th-ranked Spaniard broke serve twice in the first set before serving it out at 5-3. Both players earned one break in the second en route to a tiebreaker, at which point Ferrero found himself on the brink of a third set. Trailing 6-4, though, Montanes stormed back to win the next four points--and the match.
"I’m very happy to win today and to reach the final tomorrow," said Montanes. "It is special to beat Ferrero. I’d played him five times and always lost, but today I won."
