Juan Carlos Ferrero and Gael Monfils reach the Stuttgart semifinals on Friday. They are joined in the last four by Albert Montanes, who breezed past Jurgen Melzer.
(4) Juan Carlos Ferrero d. Simon Greul 6-3, 7-5
Ferrero continued his stellar 2010 clay-court campaign by defeating Greul in one hour and 17 minutes to reach the Mercedes Cup semifinals on Friday. The fourth-seeded Spaniard took control right from the start by losing only six points in his first five service games. Greul raised his level in set two, but the 73rd-ranked German faltered with a donation of serve at 5-5. Following his third break of the day, Ferrero served out the proceedings at 6-5. Next up for the veteran is an all-Spanish affair with Albert Montanes.
(5) Albert Montanes d. (2) Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-1
Melzer has been solid on the slow stuff throughout his career (including a semifinal performance at this year's French Open), but Montanes gave him a clay-court lesson on Friday in Stuttgart. The 30th-ranked Spaniard broke serve twice in the first set--including at 5-4--and the pulled away during the second frame of play. Melzer did not serve well enough (56 percent), and he lost more than half of the points even when his first delivery found the court. Montanes fired six aces and converted both of his break chances in set two on the way to a semifinal berth.
(3) Gael Monfils vs. Florian Mayer 5-7, 6-3, 6-4
A high-quality and entertaining thriller saw Monfils outlast Mayer in two hours and 10 minutes. Mayer got off to a strong start and his first break of the day at 6-5 gave the underdog a one-set advantage. Monfils, however, picked up his aggressiveness in set two and completely decimated his opponent's second serves. Three breaks allowed the Frenchman to cruise through the second and start the final frame with serve. A pair of breaks were exchanged en route to a 5-4 Monfils advantage, at which point Mayer cracked while serving to stay in the match. The world No. 17 struck for a decisive break to set up a semifinal meeting with unseeded Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
