Defending champion Robin Soderling advanced to the SkiStar Swedish Open final, following his three set victory over former champion David Ferrer. The Swede is set for a championship meeting with fourth seed Nicolas Almagro.
World No. 5 Robin Soderling survived his third consecutive three-setter of the week on Saturday, as he fought his way through to the Bastad final. The Swede overcame a set deficit to oust third seed David Ferrer, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Soderling struck 11 aces and saved eight of nine break points en route to the semifinal-round victory in one hour and 58 minutes. The 25-year-old is through to his fourth ATP World Tour final of the season.
After surrendering the opening set with one loss of serve, Soderling came back in the second. The defending champion, who missed two break chances at 3-2, captured three consecutive games to draw level. Ferrer had no answer in set three, as he fell behind 1-5. Soderling reached match point at 5-2, sealing the win on his 11th ace of the day.
"I had to play better today because Ferrer puts a lot of balls back at a very high pace," said Soderling. "I always liked to play high balls, though, it doesn’t seem to bother me to hit at shoulder height. I can still serve better and reduce the number of mistakes but it was much better today."
Soderling will take on fourth seed Nicolas Almagro for the SkiStar Open title. The Spaniard defeated fifth-seeded countryman Tommy Robredo in the semifinal, 6-1, 6-3.
