Andy Roddick returns to tennis on home courts next week, with the American No. 1 taking a wild card entry into the Atlanta Tennis Championships in a field which also includes fellow Grand Slam winner Lleyton Hewitt.
Three weeks ago, three-time Wimbledon finalist Roddick went out in the fourth round on the grass to Taiwan's Lu Yen-Hsun.
Roddick heads the field at the resumption of a tournament last staged a decade ago. Also entered in the first hardcourt outing in the US Open run-up are John Isner, winner at Wimbledon of the longest match ever played, Hewitt, and Americans James Blake and Robby Ginepri.
Georgia's Ginepri won the Indianapolis title last summer before that event was sold to Atlanta.
Roddick, 27, won the title in Atlanta in 2001. He comes to Atlanta with a 32-7 match record this season, with a trophy from January in Brisbane.

Many criticize Roddick for playing on the American hardcourts, but little do they realize how much these tournaments are dependent on his presence. He didn't/couldn't play at Indy for two years and look at what has happened to Indy. Anyway, I'm happy to see him playing and it's something to look forward to next week. GO RODDCK!!!!!

I was shocked to see the poor attendance at all the tournaments this past week. Whenever I tuned in to watch there were rows and rows of empty seats and for some matches there was no more than a handful of spectators.

A friend is in Atlanta. (Is that where you are, Ricky? If so, coverage, please!)
I look forward to her report!

ed: I agree with you on the tourneys that are being played presently are poorly attended. I think a lot of these tournaments would fold if it weren't for sponsorships because tickets are expensive and most fans save their money for the GS. I often wonder why Dubai wants to have a tournament over there because most of the time the stadium is only about one-third filled. As I see it, Dubai is merely for the entertainment of the Sheiks who have the dough to keep the tournament running, so I suppose fan participaton is immaterial.
