Nikolay Davydenko has yet to shake the rust from his game after a slow return following a broken wrist which kept him off court for three months in the spring.
The Russian will now try to make up for lost time after exiting in his opening second-round match in Stuttgart.
The clay outing was the first on the surface for the No. 6 in almost a year. He went down to to Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in three sets at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.
But now it's onto the practise court for Davydenko, with a title defence in Hamburg next week looming. The two-time Stuttgart semi-finalist admitted he was unable to adjust to clay after last weekend's Davis Cup indoors in Moscow.
"It was hard my legs, and two days were not enough to make me switch from hard court on clay, "said Davydenko, who was beaten in two of three rubbers at the weekend as Russia lost to Argentina in Davis quarter-final play.
"I now need some stamina if I'm to be ready for Hamburg."

I hope Davy can successfully defend his Hamburg title. Lots of work to be done for him as he has many points to defend for the rest of the season. I hope he is still in the top ten by end of the year!
