  • Monfils, Ferrero survive in Stuttgart, Davydenko out

    7/15/10 10:41 PM | Ricky Dimon
Monfils, Ferrero survive in Stuttgart, Davydenko out Gael Monfils and Juan Carlos Ferrero persevere through three-setters on Thursday in Stuttgart. Nikolay Davydenko, however, loses his opener in surprising fashion to Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

    Daniel Gimeno-Traver d. (1) Nikolay Davydenko 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-1

The No. 1 seed at the Mercedes Cup is out after one match as Davydenko fell to Gimeno-Traver in two hours and 12 minutes. Gimeno-Traver lost the momentum after winning set one in a tiebreaker, but he recovered to produce a near-flawless final frame of play. The 88th-ranked Spaniard did not face a break point in the third and seized two breaks of his own before serving out the proceedings at 5-1. Next up for Gimeno-Traver is a an all-unseeded quarterfinal with Marco Chiudinelli.

    (3) Gael Monfils d. (Q) Pablo Andujar 6-4, 5-7, 6-4

Monfils almost became a second Top 4 seed to crash out of Stuttgart right away, but he held on to defeat Andujar in two hours and 14 minutes. Andujar had already enjoyed a stellar week by qualifying and reaching the second round, and the 125th-ranked Spaniard almost kept his run going. He broke Monfils at 5-4 in the second only to see his luck run out in the final frame of play. Monfils raised his level and lost a mere three points in his last five service games, so one break was easily enough for the third-seeded Frenchman to set up a quarterfinal clash against Florian Mayer.

    (4) Juan Carlos Ferrero d. Horacio Zeballos 6-7(1), 7-6(3), 6-2

This match had been suspended on Wednesday night prior to the second-set tiebreaker with Zeballos leading one set to love. Ferrero, though, returned as a different player on Thursday and dismissed Zeballos without too much difficulty. The 21st-ranked Spaniard dropped only three points in the 'breaker and surrendered just two games in the third set while saving all three of Zeballos' break chances. Ferrero struck 10 aces and double-faulted twice on his way to a quarterfinal match with Simon Greul.
