Robin Soderling returns to ATP World Tour competition, topping a field of 28 players at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad this week. The 2009 champion enters the draw as the top seed.
Defending champion Robin Soderling heads back to work as the ATP World Tour makes a stop on clay in Sweden. The World No. 5, returning to competition following a quarterfinal finish at Wimbledon (lost to Nadal), is taking part in his 9th Swedish Open. Soderling took the 2009 title after downing Argentine Juan Monaco in the final.
Soderling begins the tournament with a 31-11 record, helped by a title-winning run in Rotterdam (def. Youzhny) and runner-up berths in Barcelona (lost to Verdasco) and the French Open (lost to Nadal). The 25-year-old Swede will be aiming to win his 12th clay-court match of the season on Wednesday.
With the absence of most of the top 10 players, who have elected to rest before the North American hard-court season commences, Soderling is slated to kick off his Bastad bid as the top seed. The Swede leads a group of seeded players that includes Fernando Verdasco, 2007 winner David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro, two-time champion Tommy Robredo, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Denis Istomin.
After an opening-round bye, Soderling looks to a second-round clash with wildcard fellow Swede Andreas Vinciguerra. The closest remaining seed in the 25-year-old’s section of the draw is third seed David Ferrer, who looms as a likely semifinal opponent. Should the seeds hold through the week, Soderling would face second seed Fernando Verdasco for the title.
Verdasco, currently ranked World No. 9, also received a first-round bye. The Barcelona champion has fourth-seeded compatriot Nicolas Almagro in his half, as well as fifth seed Tommy Robredo, who won the Swedish Open in 2006 and 2008.

2 top ten players is actually good for a 250 tournament. probably only queens and doha is much better... due to big start money in the latter...
