Seeded players Gilles Simon and Albert Montanes advance in Stuttgart on Tuesday. Philipp Kohlschreiber, however, is upset by fellow German Florian Mayer.
(7) Gilles Simon d. (WC) Dustin Brown 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1)
Simon picked up a much-needed win (his fifth of an injury-plagued season) by outlasting Brown in one hour and 50 minutes in the first round of the Mercedes Cup on Tuesday. A single break of serve decided each of the first two sets, but neither man could strike in the final frame of play. Simon had four break chances, but Brown fought off multiple match points in order to force a decisive tiebreaker. Still, the 33rd-ranked Frenchman was the better play throughout the third set and he dominated the 'breaker seven points to one. Next up for Simon is Simon Greul, who dismissed fellow German Michael Berrer in straight sets.
(5) Albert Montanes d. Philipp Petzschner 2-6, 7-5, 6-2
Montanes got off to a dreadful start, but he bounced back and battled past Petzschner in one hour and 45 minutes. Petzschner is far more comfortable on faster surfaces, but he neutralized his opponent's advantage by playing aggressive tennis and capitalizing on Montanes errors. In the end, however, the 30th-ranked Spaniard delivered a clay-court lesson. Montanes had to save just one break point in the second and faced none in the third as he cruised to victory. Stuttgart's No. 5 seed will now take on Juan Ignacio Chela, a straight-set winner over Eduardo Schwank.
Florian Mayer vs. (6) Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2
The German fans saw two of their own go head-to-head on Tuesday, but Mayer made sure that the match did not live up to expectations. Mayer routed Kohlschreiber in one hour and 22 minutes, earning his first ATP-level win over his higher-ranked countryman. The world No. 56 thwarted all seven of his opponent's break-point opportunities to set up a second-round encounter against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
