The ironman of Argentine Davis Cup tennis, David Nalbandian, secured an unlikely straight-set victory for his country over Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-3.
David Nalbandian had his work cut out for him on Sunday. Eduardo Schwank lost the fourth singles rubber to Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 3-6, 1-6, 4-6, leveling the tie at 2-2, with the decider on the shoulders of Mikhail Youzhny and David Nalbandian.
Nalbandian struggled with injury for much of the 2010 season. He had not played a match since Monte-Carlo and his ranking dropped all the way to 153 in the world. He did not forget how to play tennis, however.
Youzhny is ranked 14 in the world, and came into the tie playing good, if not great tennis. The Russian bombed out of Wimbledon in the second round, but he had an encouraging clay court season, with a run to the quartefinals at Roland Garros and a win in Munich.
Still, the Russian was at Nalbandian's mercy. The Argentine always seems to play his best tennis in Davis Cup -- and this quarterfinal was no exception.
The first set was the most competitive from Youzhny. The Russian forced a tiebreaker, but Nalbandian eventually prevailed 7-5. From that point on, the match was all Nalbandian. He won the next two sets comfortably, and the Argentine squad, minus their top player Juan Martin Del Potro, moved into the semifinals against France.
