  • Chiudinelli, Zverev advance in Stuttgart

    7/12/10 11:33 PM | Ricky Dimon
Chiudinelli, Zverev advance in Stuttgart Marco Chiudinelli takes out Victor Hanescu on Monday in the Stuttgart first round. Mischa Zverev also advances, getting the best of Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets.

No. 8 seed and 2009 runner-up Victor Hanescu lost his opening match at the Mercedes Cup on Monday, succumbing to Marco Chiudinelli 7-6(4), 6-3 in one hour and 34 minutes. Chiudinelli awaits either Victor Crivoi or Bjorn Phau in the second round.

The veteran Swiss never dropped serve and pulled away from Hanescu after winning the first set in a tiebreaker. A single break in the second allowed Chiudinelli to serve out the proceedings at 5-3.

"Fantastic win for me," said Chiudinelli, who won just three more points than his opponent but came up big at the clutch moments. "I had not many expectations here. But I played really well. I served well and won most of the crucial points and very happy to come through."

Mischa Zverev also advanced on Monday, dismissing Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 25 minutes. Stakhovsky won a recent grass-court title in Eastbourne, but he was utterly hopeless on the clay courts of Stuttgart. The Ukrainian was broken five times and lost an amazing 17 of 23 second-serve points.

Zverev donated his own serve twice, but he broke Stakhovsky one last time at 5-3 in the second to finish things off in style. Next up for the German wild card is No. 2 seed Jurgen Melzer.
