  • Serbia heads into Sunday up 2-1

    7/11/10 4:15 AM | Cheryl Murray
Serbia heads into Sunday up 2-1 With a doubles win on Saturday, Serbia needs just 1 more victory to move into the Davis Cup semifinals.

Sunday will feature the most electrifying singles rubber of the tie so far. Top ranked Croat Marin Cilic will take on top-ranked Serb Novak Djokovic. Croatia will be fighting to stay in the tie, Serbia for the decisive win.

Cilic and Djokovic have played a couple of interesting matches but the Serb has amassed a 4-0 head-to-head over Cilic. The last time the two players met was in 2009 in Beijing.

Cilic will surely have extra motivation this time, playing for his team’s survival in front of his countrymen, but Djokovic is the better player at the moment.

The Serb comes into this weekend off an impressive run to the semifinals at Wimbledon. Fatigue could be a factor for Djokovic, but he’ll likely have enough left in the tank for one more match. Serbia should find themselves with a dead fifth rubber on Sunday.

Should Djokovic lose, however, the weight of his country’s expectations will be on the shoulders of world No. 44 Viktor Troicki, who will take on tour veteran Ivan Ljubicic.

Troicki did not deal well with the stress of playing in front of a stadium of Croats on Friday. Serbia’s best hope for a semifinal spot lies with Djokovic.

he almost has the first set in his pocket :) and pretty comfortable i should say.

mriiidula , 7/11/10 12:42 PM

mriiidula, try:

Nole is playing well, but audience is horrible. Because of them and their constant whistling on his serve he didn't finish the 1st set before!
Ajde , Nole!

OllyK , 7/11/10 1:02 PM

OllyK , 7/11/10 2:38 PM

congrats nole and the serbian team, 3:1 in the center of the most hostile environment in croatia.

rfzr , 7/11/10 2:49 PM

Congratulations Srbija! and Nole wow, strong, convincing win in that noxious environment, didn't think you had that in you!

stu , 7/11/10 6:31 PM

Wow, great win Nole! Pretty focused, with that drive to beat a tough opponent despite the hostile crowd (quite terrible). The spectators and Croatian team were punished twice in todays mach by the umpire. Poor tennis players, it was not their fault. The whistling happens more or less in all Davis Cup matches, but the insults were unbearable.

Good job you guys, Serbia is proud of you :). See you in Belgrade Arena when you gather to play with Czechs :))))

stu, I felt the same. I was affraid of what might happen today. And even now, I just want to see him (all of them) BACK in Serbia. During the match with Ljubo 2 Croats who were sitting behind Nole's father, attacked him, first verbally and then physically. Horrible, horrible stuff. So, Nole was mentally really really really strong today!! Good job, Nole!

OllyK , 7/11/10 7:45 PM

Olly, i have new respect for Nole now. The only one of the top 5 who will play davis cup, come hail or shine

stu , 7/11/10 11:51 PM

they attacked him?! are u serious?! i never expected that! the insults i did (though not to such extent) but really didnt think there would be any physical abuse.
shame.
amazing how nole held it together.

mriiidula , 7/12/10 8:35 AM

He is special, always was and always will be, in many ways. I don't think I can respect him more than I respect him now. Serbia is very very proud.
Yes, mriiidula, because of what happened in the 1st match, in the 2nd Nole's match 2 rows behind Nole's father were reserved for Serbian police and Serbian fans...thank god it's finished!
I just hope I'll be in Belgrade in September!!
