Doubles team Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zeballos gave Argentina a 2-1 edge over Russia in their quarterfinal Davis Cup tie. Sunday’s singles rubbers will determine who goes to the semifinals.
The third singles rubber of the tournament, and the first scheduled for Monday will be between Leonardo Mayer and Nikolay Davydenko. Mayer is ranked No. 58 in the world, and plays for Argentina in the absence of other top-ranked Argentines, like Juan Martin Del Potro, who is out with wrist surgery.
Mayer is largely a clay courter. He has never played Nikolay Davydenko, but the Russian is ranked 6 in the world. The outcome of this rubber should level the tie at 2-2 with the deciding match falling to Mikhail Youzhny and David Nalbandian.
Nalbandian has proven Argentina’s Davis Cup savior often in his career, and indeed the world No. 153 came through for his country in a big way in his first singles rubber against Nikolay Davydenko.
Still, Youzhny holds a 2-1 advantage over Nalbandian and the Argie came into this tie off an injury that kept him out of action for most of the spring.
If Davydenko can hold up his end of the bargain, Youzhny should be able to seal the win for Russia.
