France makes quick work of Spain in the Davis Cup quarterfinals, ousting the defending champions 3-0 on Saturday in Clermont-Ferrand. Next up for France is either Argentina or Russia.
There will be a new Davis Cup winner in 2010.
Two-time defending champion Spain fell to France 3-0 on Saturday in Clermont-Ferrand. The host Frenchmen, who won both of Friday's singles rubbers, finished the clean sweep as Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra defeated Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 7-6(5).
After being dominated in sets one and two, the Spaniards forced a third-set tiebreaker. They faced a tie-clinching match point at 5-6 in the 'breaker, but Verdasco saved it with a forehand pass. Spain won the next point on serve then converted its first chance when Benneteau mishandled a tough volley.
France, however, made no mistake in the fourth-set decider. Spain saved two more match points on serve at 3-6 and 4-6, but Llodra finished the job with a winning volley.
"Amazing," said Llodra. "We play tennis for that. Today it was too good on the court. When I started playing tennis, my dream was to play in the French team. When I was 11 years old, I saw Guy Forget and Henri Leconte in Davis Cup in Lyon when they won against the USA and, in my head...I said one time in my life I want to be like this, and today it was amazing."
"We beat Spain, the defending champions. It’s unbelievable."
Forger, now the team's captain, added, "It’s as good as it can get. Great crowd, some great matches. When you play the Spanish guys, they are going to give their best all the way to the end. They are great sportsmen and I wish them all the best and hopefully they can win the World Cup on Sunday."
While the Spaniards will be able to watch their soccer team following Sunday's dead singles rubbers, France can now focus on a semifinal tie against either Argentina or Russia. The visiting Argentines currently lead that tie 2-1.
