  • Monfils holds off Ferrer in Davis Cup thriller

    7/10/10 12:52 AM | Ricky Dimon
Monfils holds off Ferrer in Davis Cup thriller Gael Monfils outlasted David Ferrer in a five-set Davis Cup rubber on Friday afternoon in France. Monfils' win gave the host nation a 1-0 lead over two-time defending champion Spain.

Gael Monfils thrilled the French crowd with a 7-6(3), 6-2, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 in the Davis Cup quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. Monfils needed three hours and 57 minutes while fighting off a furious Ferrer rally to give France a 1-0 advantage over Spain.

Ferrer won the first three games of the match, but Monfils broke back for 2-3 and eventually forced an opening-set tiebreaker. After taking it seven points to three, the 17th-ranked Frenchman used the momentum to cruise through set two without any trouble.

To the chagrin of the Clermont-Ferrand fans, the tide soon turned in Ferrer's favor. The 12th-ranked Spaniard broke for a 2-1 lead and served out the third set from there, saving two break points at 5-4 with serve-and-volley winners. One break was also enough for Ferrer in the fourth, as he struck at 5-5 before finishing off the set on serve one game later.

Nonetheless, one more momentum swing was in order. Monfils raced to 3-0 lead in the third and although he failed to served out the proceedings at 5-3, he refused to buckle under the pressure. Ferrer made only one error at 4-5, but Monfils came up with some spectacular shots to go along with a winner off the net-cord and he clinched victory with a final forehand blast.

"I played really strong and solid and I pressed myself and I stayed very focused and I believed in myself," explained Monfils, who put his country out in front of the two-time defending Davis Cup champions.

"It was a tough match but it was a good match," added Ferrer. "I changed tactics when I lost two sets. I was playing slower and with more rallies. Gael served good. He served better than me. That was the key."
