Amid a hostile crowd in Croatia, Novak Djokovic defeated Ivan Ljubicic in the first of 2 singles rubbers on Friday.
This tie was never going to be the friendly rivalry that is sometimes enjoyed in Davis Cup. Tensions often run high in the crowd when Serbs and Croats battle in a sporting contest. This was no exception. The Serbian national anthem was met with a round of boos from Croat supporters, and insults including chanting “Kill the Serb” was leveled at Djokovic during his straight set 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-1 victory.
The first set tiebreak set the tone for the rest of the match. Ljubicic served well, but his ground strokes were no match to the newly-crowned world No. 2 Djokovic. With the first set in his pocket, the Serb rolled through the next 2 sets.
Djokovic’s Serbian countryman Viktor Troicki was not as successful in his rubber. He played the rising ATP tour star Marin Cilic. Cilic won the match 6-4, 7-5, 6-2, the win leveling the tie at a win a piece.
Saturday’s doubles rubber will pit Ivan Dodig and Antonio Veic from Croatia against the Serb duo of Janko Tipsarevic and Nenad Zimonjic.

Terrible. I am so glad Novak and the rest had the mental strength to beat them with their rackets instead of hatred back at them.
