  • Argentina and Russia split singles rubbers

    7/10/10 4:14 AM | Cheryl Murray
Argentina and Russia split singles rubbers The tie between Russian and Argentina heads into Saturday’s doubles match with a win apiece.

David Nalbandian proved on Friday to be every bit the Davis Cup giant that he is reputed to be. The world No. 154 has not played a single competitive match since Monte-Carlo, meaning that he missed almost the entire clay season and all of the grass season. Yet that didn’t stop him from coming out in enemy territory on Friday and defeating world No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko. In straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(5), 7-6(6).

The match was a close one, with a pair of tiebreakers deciding the second and third sets. Still, the win gave the Argies a leg-up going into the second singles rubber.

Leonardo Mayer was not quite as fortunate against Mikhail Youzhny. The Russian breezed through his match as expected. In fact, Mayer never really got close to taking so much as a set.

The hometown crowd was delighted with Youzhny’s 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 win to level the tie at a 1-1.

The doubles rubber pits Teimuraz Gabashvili and Igor Kunitsyn against the Argentine pair of Nalbandian and Horacio Zeballos.
