France and Spain will go head-to-head in a blockbuster quarterfinal Davis Cup tie this weekend. The action will get underway with Gael Monfils going up against David Ferrer.
Gael Monfils and David Ferrer will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they meet in the opening rubber of the France vs. Spain quarterfinal Davis Cup tie on Friday. Their only previous encounter came two years ago at the French Open, with Monfils prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Monfils once again has home-court advantage, as this tie is being contested on the indoor hard courts of Clermont-Ferrand. In terms of current form, however, the outlook is not so bright for the 17th-ranked Frenchman. He was upset by Fabio Fognini in the Roland Garros second round, lost his Queen's Club opener to Rainer Schuettler, and fell to Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets in the Wimbledon third round.
Ferrer, on the other hand, is in fine form at the moment. Once a staple of the Top 10, the 28-year-old Spaniard is back up to No. 12 in the world thanks to a brilliant run on clay. His dirt season came to a disappointing end at the hands of a red-hot Jurgen Melzer in round three of the French Open, but Ferrer won three matches at Wimbledon before succumbing to Robin Soderling in a tight five-setter.
If Spain was hosting this tie, Ferrer would surely have an edge. Monfils' serve, however, will give his opponent trouble on a fast hard court and few players thrive in a Davis Cup-esque atmosphere quite like Monfils. He loves the spotlight, and that energy could be the difference in what should be a thriller of a match. Monfils in five sets is the pick.
