  • Croatia and Serbia collide in tense quarterfinal

    7/9/10 5:33 AM | Cheryl Murray
Croatia and Serbia collide in tense quarterfinal Fierce rivals Croatia and Serbia will clash in a highly-charged quarterfinal tie between two countries that were once part of Yugoslavia.

Serbia will venture into Croatia, with Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki at the helm for Serbia to try to advance to the Davis Cup semifinals.

The first rubber will pit Ivan Ljubicic from Croatia against Novak Djokovic of Serbia. The Serb comes into the match at a bit of a disadvantage beyond the fact that Ljubicic will have rampant crowd support. Djokovic just made the Wimbledon semifinals, where he lost to Tomas Berdych, so fatigue could play a factor in Friday’s tie as well.

Djokovic is the better of the two players, and he holds a handy 5-2 record over the Croat. Despite the rampant crowd support, Serbia should win the rubber.

The second singles match will feature Marin Cilic and Viktor Troicki. Here Serbia could be in trouble. Cilic has really come on lately, and has situated himself as a threat to just about anyone on hard courts. Troicki has been fairly steady, but he finds himself at No. 44 in the world.

In addition, Troicki has not managed to beat Cilic in 5 tries. A scenario in which he could do so on Cilic’s favorite surface at home is difficult to imagine.

When the singles rubbers are done on Friday, this should be a 1-1 tie.

troicki is the guy with the smallest ba**s on the tour. i would be surprised if he won just 1 (one) match.

novak forgot how to hit through the court. it seems he is more amused with the ball placement instead.

rfzr: would you want to play after this crap?

Croatia's fans booed and jeered and refused to stand when Serbia's national anthem was played, and some chanted "Kill the Serb" and other abuse at Djokovic.

have to root for Serbia based on reports like that

and they should win with Tipsy and Zimonjic in the doubles lineup

I just knew it was going to be like that. Dreadful to have to play tennis when people are using the word "kill".

Disgraceful.

I hate to generalize but don't the 'Croatians' cause trouble at the Australian Open too?

I think it was the Bosniaks harassing Taylor Dent while he was playing Amer Delic a naturalized Bosnian. They had previously harassed Novak I believe. Anyhow Taylor's dad, Phil Dent and Aussie, was pissed off about it and complained.

cheryl, ricky, not surprising at all given the history between these two nations. don't want to go into politics but whoever is interested please have a look at:

ha ve to give credit to ljubicic who asked umpire to stop the ordeal.
