Robin Soderling outlasts David Ferrer in five sets on Monday at Wimbledon. Soderling is through to another meeting with Rafael Nadal for what will be a rematch of their recent French Open final.
For the second time in as many years, Robin Soderling has a rematch of the French Open final on his hands at Wimbledon.
Soderling finished runner-up to Roger Federer at Roland Garros in 2009, then lost to Federer in the Wimbledon fourth round. The Swede fell once again in the French Open title match last month against Rafael Nadal, and he will now face Nadal in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
As he starts plotting revenge, Soderling has to be glad just to be in this position. It almost wasn't the case. Soderling outlasted David Ferrer 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in three hours and three minutes on Monday in fourth-round Wimbledon action.
The world No. 6 seemed to take command after the first set and again following the third frame of play, but Ferrer refused to give up. Soderling's game completely disappeared in set four as he gave away two service breaks, including one at 3-5.
Having forced a fifth set, Ferrer went toe-to-toe with his opponent for the first 10 games of the final stanza. At 5-5, however, the 11th-ranked Spaniard finally cracked and allowed Soderling to seize one last momentum swing in the back-and-forth affair. Soderling then survived a tough service game at 6-5, clinching victory with a crushing service winner.
"I think I played a little bit better in my previous matches," said the No. 6 seed, who recorded 61 winners and 43 errors while serving at 64 percent. "Even though I felt I was hitting the ball well, I didn't return so well. My first-serve percentage wasn't good enough. Apart from that, I think it was a good match."
"I am happy because I have had a good year and am knocking on the Top 10, but I am sad at the same time as I have just a lost a match in 5 sets," added Ferrer. "With my serve against a Top 10 player, you pay dearly."
