Federer cruises into quarterfinal Defending champion Roger Federer earned safe passage into the Wimbledon quarterfinal early Monday, as he defeated 16th seed Jurgen Melzer in straight sets.

    (1) Roger Federer def. (16) Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3

Top seed Roger Federer booked his 25th straight Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance Monday afternoon, following his 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 dismissal of Austrian Jurgen Melzer. The defending champion, remaining on track to capture Wimbledon title No. 7, needed only one hour and 24 minutes to secure the round of 16 victory. Federer struck 28 winners to just 11 errors, and secured six of 10 break point opportunities. After pocketing an early service break in the opening set, Melzer failed to make any additional impact during the match.

Federer will face 12th seed Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinal. The Czech rallied to beat Daniel Brands of Germany in the fourth round, 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-5, 6-3.

    (10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. (32) Julien Benneteau 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1

Tenth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga improved his record to 4-3 over 32nd-seeded compatriot Julien Benneteau on Monday. The 25-year-old Frenchman hit 25 winners and 14 aces en route to a four-set victory in just under two hours of play. Tsonga is through to his first quarterfinal at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

The World No. 10 takes on World No. 4 Andy Murray for a place in the semifinal. The Scot downed 18th seed Sam Querrey in the round of 16, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Out of topic (excuse me) just to make sure the concerned TT posters cannot miss this.

ATTENTION: Fleur, rfzr, tennislover and the rest of Nadal Haters.

I hope you've seen that MTO took by Paul during the second set of Rafa/Paul match. You owe an explanation why Paul still lost the second set and the match even if he took the MTO.

According to your fair analysis, MTO is a tactic to disrupt one's oppenent rhythm so if you really that of impartials come out and speak.

fed and nadal showed why they are the top contenders..utterly dominant today...fed vs berdych and soderling vs rafa WOW!

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 9:47 PM

After watching Sod-Ferrer match, I am even more confident of Rafa's chances in the quarters.

phoenix , 6/28/10 9:52 PM

pheonix, plz dont say that too loud for Sod to hear.......he might get angry!!!!!

Monalysa , 6/28/10 10:05 PM

Ricky: Sod was not convincing, are you still picking him over Rafa?

deuce , 6/28/10 10:08 PM

duece, had soderling blown ferrer away or even outplayed him even I might have picked sod over rafa bt i want to know on what basis has soderling been given so many stars?? thrashing granollers and belucci on grass without dropping serve? is that it? also note that it is weak 2 now, and this grass favors nadal more than anybody else.nadal is the favorite imo.

and congrats duece, muzza was very good tonight ! he is in with a good shot at the title this time...i really like the way he uses his forehand to hit through the court now...this element was missing from his arsenal last year and now after working at this thing with his team he really is capable of stepping up the court and hitting winners. nadal nd federer are the most succesful on grass and look at their forehands !

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 10:25 PM

Ah well!!
the two men who could have beaten fed in SF are out in round 4!!
he is lucky..
and until a miracle happens, he will be in finals, since berdych does not look like stopping him, and djokoboy, well, its useless to think he will win. (though I hope he does)

clayking , 6/29/10 4:33 AM

Im not even going to start about what I think about Federer and the draws he so often receives.

isabeau77 , 6/29/10 5:58 AM

vamosrafa: cheers for that, yes Andy and his team have worked and worked on his forehand and it's really showing. If anyone now goes on about Andy's "passive play" they'll get a sharp virtual warning! His first serve percentage has gotta come up though, was awful for a time against Querry.

deuce , 6/29/10 7:46 AM

Cmon Roger! Calm and cool Lets beat Berdych!

Max , 6/29/10 7:55 AM

Federer has acknowledged that he was fighting a thigh problem at Halle and early at Wimbledon which he says he's over- some of the movement problems have been explained. He definitly is moving better now, so things are looking bright. He's got some big power hitters coming up though which seem to be the types of players that hurt him nowadays, so it will be interesting to see how Fed does.

tj600 , 6/29/10 10:03 AM

I believe the FED will play brilliantly against Berdych. The FED "knows" the damage Berdych is capable of. In my opinion, Wimbledon represents the FED's greatest passion for the game, be prepared for the FED in Aces, all guns and tactical equipment on the highest alert. Along came Federer. The Man, the Genius, the Maester. As Max put it: "Lets beat Berdych! :)

sky , 6/29/10 3:20 PM

LU can beat FEDERER... if he passes the Djoker test, which is very possible!........ Sorry just dreaming of a NADA_LU finals!

McQ , 6/29/10 6:34 PM

it will be a LU/tsonga Finals...just wait and watch.lol

I had the same thought isabeau (when I saw rafa's draw in the FO).

maxi , 6/29/10 7:38 PM

I'm not surprised he cruises through...his draw fixtures were easy for a so called goat, as are Murray's. No Brownie points from me.

rafanna , 6/29/10 7:48 PM

rafanna ... 6/29/10 7:48 PM

You can easily remove "so called" part ... it looks like garbage in your statement !!

mani4Tennis , 6/29/10 8:40 PM

LOL mani4Tennis :) How right you are.

That part of rafanna's statement is garbage.
