Serbia’s Novak Djokovic took on tough Aussie Lleyton Hewitt for a spot in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. The Serb won 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Novak Djokovic came out on top of this highly anticipated fourth round cenocunter. The match was a fierce baseline encounter, with the two men often going toe-to-toe with their groundstrokes.
The first set seemed destined for a tiebreak. There was not a single break point until Hewitt served to force the breaker at 6-5. At 30-30, Hewitt sent a forehand long to give Djokovic his first set point of the match. The Aussie served an apparent ace, but Djokovic challenged and was rewarded for being correct with a second serve. A wide backhand gave the Serb the opening set.
The second set progressed in a similar matter to the first. The two men remained on serve until 4-5, with Hewitt serving to stay in the match. The Aussie donated to the Djokovic cause by dumping an overhead into the net and sending a forehand awry. On set point for the Serb, the two players got into a 22-shot rally that ended when Hewitt sent a backhand just long.
Hewitt was finally able to find a finger hold in the match in the third. An early break for the Aussie and another at 5-3 gave Hewitt the chance at a fourth set.
Despite taking a medical time out and looking lethargic for much of the third set, Djokovic capitalized once again on forehand errors from Hewitt to take an early break. The Serb was able to consolidate, but at 2-1, Djokovic donated a double fault on break point to put things on level ground again.
Djokovic was able to secure the match-winning break at 4-4. As the Serb had earlier in the set, Hewitt donated the break on a double fault. Djokovic served out the match at love to set up a quarterfinal against either Andy Roddick or Yen-Hsun Lu.
