Andy Roddick fought past Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16 against Yen-Hsun Lu.
There will be no final meeting between Andy Roddick and Roger Federer this year. The two men are on the same side of the draw this year – if they meet, it will be in the semifinals.
Roddick passed a stern test on Friday in the form of Philipp Kohlschreiber. The American was dominant on serve and he played supremely clean tennis. Roddick faced no break points and hit just 1 unforced error in the set. Despite his excellent play, Roddick was not able to secure a break of serve until the waning moments of the set.
The second set featured was not quite as clean from Roddick. The American was still able to serve up 8 aces, but he committed 6 unforced errors. There were no service breaks in the set, though Roddick was the better player throughout.
The ensuing tiebreak offered the first surprise of the day. Kohlschreiber got the immediate mini-break with a crosscourt forehand winner, only to have Roddick return the favor at 2-3 to level things 3-3. The breaker remained on serve until Kohlschreiber’s first set point at 6-5. The German got a second serve, went on the attack – and just like that, the set was over.
Roddick was not daunted. The American fought hard in the third and fourth sets. Kohlschreiber had break point chances in both sets, but was unable to convert. Roddick secured a pair of service breaks in the third and another in the fourth to set up his round of 16 encounter with Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu.
