  • Hewitt, Djokovic press on at Wimbledon

    6/25/10 4:53 AM | Cheryl Murray
Hewitt, Djokovic press on at Wimbledon Lleyton Hewitt and Novak Djokovic will take to the court on Friday as the top half moves through the third round.

    Lleyton Hewitt vs. Gael Monfils

Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt has not beaten Frenchman Gael Monfils since 2004. The two men have met on two occasions since then; Monfils won both but they have never played on grass. Hewitt will have the edge in this match. The Aussie comes into Wimbledon off his first Halle title, where he beat Roger Federer in the final.

Monfils is still trying to find his footing after a spring injury kept him sidelined for 6 weeks. The Frenchman was knocked out of the French Open in the second round and again in the second round of Queen’s Club. This match should be Hewitt’s for the taking. The Aussie in 3.

    Novak Djokovic vs. Albert Montanes

No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic will take on clay courter Albert Montanes from Spain in his third round match. The bad news for Montanes is that he has not been able to Djokovic in 3 tries. The worse news is that all of those matches came on the Spaniard’s preferred surface of clay.

Djokovic is certainly not at his best on grass. The Serb has had some shocker exits in his Wimbledon past, but his tennis should certainly be good enough to get past Montanes. The Serb for the win in straight sets.

Djokovic is smothering Montanes.

I'd prefer Monfils to Hewitt as Nole's next opponent. It will be a lesson in tennis headcase management.

I cant judge the standard of Nole's game in this match but the commentators seem pretty impressed. Except for his first serves which (to them) seem weak, which may be dangerous against better opponents...

djokovic's crushing montanes. Monfils has a shot at upsetting hewitt, afterall he is dripping with talent and his coach is none other than Roger Rasheed-hewitt's ex-coach.

thanks for giving us 2 painless matches, Nole. we'll be ready at the edge of our seats for the next one!

brad gilbert says nole's chances will be decided by his serve (agree 100%), all other elements are ok. nole looked a bit tired to my liking today ...

Nice, neat match from Novak.

smr , 6/25/10 3:57 PM

...and he's still a bit defensive and should be finishing off points earlier like he used to. there was nothing wrong i guess today, but nothing to rave about either...

Hewitt about to break Monfils.

smr , 6/25/10 4:00 PM

Hewitt outlasts Monfils in 2nd set tie break. Hewitt up 2 sets to love.

Monfils was pathetic. He played neither with body nor with mind. It appears that he is chronically short of stamina. The match was less a reflection on Hewitt's capability. Not much can be read into this to assess the outcome of the next match, i.e., with Djoker.

"He played neither with body nor with mind. It appears that he is chronically short of stamina"

Eskay,Monfils NEVER plays with his body or his mind. Despite his talent,he is one of the worst tacticians on tour. And he always sprints so much and wears himself out.
