Tennis king Roger Federer kept a lunch date with Britain's Queens Elizabeth II as the monarch visited Wimbledon for the first time in 33 years.
The dark-suited Swiss and his wife Mirka were among a small group invited to lunch with the head of state before the start of Centre court play.
The monarch last dropped around the SW19 in 1977, the year Britain won a title on the women's side through Virginia Wade.
After a walkabout through cordoned-off thousands of adoring public, the 84-year-old Queen made her way to the Wimbledon player complex where she met a receiving line of current and former greats of the sport. Federer made sure he bowed, an optional for players according to protocol gurus.
Missing from the ceremony was Scot Andy Murray, who was opening later against Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the second round. Murray's place was taken by three-time finalist Andy Roddick, who was joined by Novak Djokovic in his tennis clothes.
Federer and wife Mirka plus former British player Tim Henman were among a small group who dined with the Queen at Wimbledon's members-only inner sanctum on a menu comprising salmon, orange-and-honey chicken with vegetables and, of course, the traditional strawberries and cream.
