They played 20 more games on Thursday, but the longest match in tennis history has finally come to an end. John Isner prevails over Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in one the most improbable sports battles of all time.
The match that would not end finally ended on Thursday.
John Isner came out on the winning end of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68 epic with Nicolas Mahut in a first-round Wimbledon match that took three days to complete. It lasted 11 hours and five minutes, more than four hours longer than the previous longest match in tennis history.
The improbable instant classic had been suspended due to darkness on Tuesday and it had been suspended due to darkness on Wednesday. For more than hour, it looked like it could be suspended due to darkness again on Thursday!
After 19 games of more of the same in the match's third day, Isner decided that simply would not happen. The 6'9'' American came up with a brilliant forehand pass at 69-68, 30-30 to set up his fifth match point. This time Isner converted, striking a solid return of serve to set up a clinching backhand pass.
Isner and Mahut, understandably, embraced at the net, seemingly leaning on each other to prevent from falling over. An on-court ceremony--more reminiscent of a Grand Slam title match--saw awards presented to the two competitors along with chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani.
And why not? This one-for-the-ages encounter set all kinds of records; records that almost certainly will never be broken. Some of the marks include (among unquestionably many others):
- Longest professional tennis match: 11 hours and five minutes
- Most games in a match: 183
- Longest fifth set: 8 hours and 11 minutes (longer than what was previously the longest entire match in tennis history)
- Most games in a fifth set: 138
- Most total aces in a match: 215
- Most aces in a match by an individual: Isner 112

what is the Virgin Trophy that Isner received afterward? Anyone know?

Ricky, here is your answer:
...................Before the interview the pair were each presented with a crystal bowl and crystal champagne flutes by the All England Club to mark their historic match.
The duel will go down as the most extraordinary in tennis history, smashing the previous records for the longest match, the longest set, the most games in a set and a match, the most aces in a match and the most aces by a player.

did Mahut at least win the record for most double faults in a match?

Poor Mahut will forever be the Cinderella of this saga. His achievement in holding his own serve throughout that epic was an incredible feat in itself - but virtually eclipsed when he finally faltered. I hope 'Serving 67 Consecutive Times to Stay in the Match' is written into the record books.

When Mahut's career is over I don't think he will look back at this match and feel bad about it. On the contrary, I think he'll feel proud for having plaid the longest match in tennis history - probably the longest that ever will - it's just like that Nike add in the 90s, remember? with Agassi and Sampras :)
Amazing - they should have given another Virgin award to Mahut in my opinion - thx for the link Ricky

Clever of Virgin to jump on the bandwagon: bad judgement not to award it to Mahut as well.
The trophy is given for outstanding human endeavour - there were two men in that match pushing themselves to the limit of endurance!!!!!

as time goes on, even in a matter of a few years, I really don't think people are even going to remember who won the match. In fact, when I think about the match it already usually takes a me a few seconds to remember who won!!!!
if it had been a Wimbledon final it would have been different, but since it was in the first-round, both players pretty much achieved the same thing. Mahut is/was just as much a winner.
In fact I would am interested to know what the caption says beneath the items Mahut donated to the Hall of Fame. I bet it says "the 11 hour match, 70-68 in the fifth set, longest match in tennis history between Mahut and Isner" and makes no mention that "Mahut lost to Isner 70-68."

I guess you are right. I bet the fifth set scoreline will come up as a question forever on Quiz shows, Trivial Pursuit etc.

Here is something really unbelievable! :)
'As if he hadn't played enough tennis already Mahut finished Thursday with a set of doubles - you've guessed it, back on Court 18 - but revealed that, physically at least, he didn't feel too bad. "To be honest, I'm feeling great. Just want to come back on Court 18 and win this time."'
