Robin Soderling and David Ferrer pave routine paths through the Wimbledon first round on Tuesday. Soderling takes out Robby Ginepri and Ferrer rolls over Nicolas Kiefer.
French Open runner-up Robin Soderling kicked off his Wimbledon campaign in lightning-quick fashion on Tuesday, destroying Robby Ginepri 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 18 minutes. Soderling crushed 13 aces and won 42 of 46 first-serve points to avenge a Chennai Open loss to Ginepri earlier in the season.
There was never any doubt that Soderling would get revenge at the All-England Club. The sixth-seeded Swede broke serve twice in each of the first two sets, finishing off each frame in style with a break at 5-2. Soderling fought off two break points in the third and needed just one break of his own before serving out the match at 5-3.
Joining Soderling in the second round is David Ferrer, who erased Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 40 minutes. Ferrer was in fine form from start to finish, recording 50 winners against 19 errors, striking 13 aces, and going an almost unheard of 44 for 48 on first-serve points.
Like Soderling, the ninth-seeded Spaniard ended both sets one and two with a break. Ferrer, who never dropped serve the entire day, added another break in the third frame of play to finish off the proceedings with ease at 5-3.
Next up for Ferrer is Florent Serra, who eased past Simon Greul in straight sets. Marcel Granollers, a winner in one hour and 33 minutes over Frederico Gil, will face Soderling for a spot in the third round.
