John Isner and Nicolas Mahut are still playing the longest match in tennis history. Play was suspended for a second consecutive night at 59-59 in the fifth set.
John Isner and Nicolas Mahut battled to 59-59 in the fifth set in a historic match that was postponed due to darkness for a second straight day after 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday night.
The longest match in the history of tennis will continue on Thursday as Isner and Mahut look for a place in the second round. It will surpass the 10-hour mark shortly after they take the court, not before 3:30 p.m. local time.
Serving first in the final set, Isner has held four match points; one at 10-9, two at 33-32, and most recently at 59-58. Mahut did not see a break point from the second set until 50-50 in the fifth, when he had a 15-40 lead.
The match has already set records for time, number of games, number of games in a set, number of total aces, number of total aces in a set, aces by an individual, and winners, among others.

I don't know...Isner didn't look like he was feeling very spiffy there at the end. He's going to have a hard time tomorrow, I think.
Mahut looked pretty good, considering.

farhang1983 , 6/23/10 11:39 PM

vamosrafa , 6/23/10 11:48 PM
glad they suspended it. was seriously worried for isner towards the end. even my boyfriend (who has been saying for weeks how rubbish tennis is and how the world cup is so much better) was watching it rather than the football and said isner looked like he was about to collapse
really, really looking forward to the resumption of it tomorrow :D
Sib69 , 6/23/10 11:58 PM
roddick-El was the longest 21-19 ... not even close..lol
vamosrafa , 6/24/10 12:06 AM

Monalysa , 6/24/10 12:13 AM
Monalysa - haha, i know. wc 2010 hasn't been nowhere near as interesting as wimbledon has. and we're only on the 3rd day!

+++++++++
Just to put things in perspective, the last set ALONE breaks every record by itself! :)
The LAST SET ALONE clocking at at SEVEN Hours and Six Minutes and a mind boggling 118 Games comfortably beats the longest games in terms of time and games at SIX Hrs, 33 mins between Fabrice Santoro and Arnaud Clement & 112 Games between Pancho Gonzales and Charlie Pasarel. Even in terms of aces, forget the 98 aces, Isner beats the previous best of 56 aces in the legendary last set itsef.
One more thing, the only record that the last set alone has yet to beat is the previous longest game in any form of tennis, a 122-game 1973 Davis Cup doubles match. And that too is just 6 games away. This Last Set is one hell of an animal I say!!
Bows & Applause!

Prediction for tomorrow: Pain ... and for the day after ... and the day after that ... and the day after that ...
SenorPlaid , 6/24/10 5:33 AM
So, here is a list of all the records that were made today (all these records happened even after considering records made in doubles, among men's and women's tennis in its 130 years of history of professional tennis. Many newspapers give different records because they do not consider several records during pre-open era.)..
1) longest match ever by time, with the match lasting 10 hrs+
2) longest match ever in terms of games, 167 games so far
3) longest ever set, with the 5th set lasting 7 hrs 6 mins. longest set in terms of games as well.118
4) most aces by a single player in a match- 98 by isner
5) most aces by a single player in a set- 70 by isner
6) 2nd most aces by a single player in a match-94 by mahut
7) 2nd most aces by a single player in a set- 26 by mahut
8) maximum aces in a match combined- 192 aces together
9) maximum winners in a single match ever
10)maximum points played in single match ever
P.S. of course some records are automatically made when the above records are made..
like that of longest mach at wimbledon, longest match at a grandslam etc..
TRIVIA
1) first time ever the number 50 is shown on a tennis scoreboard
2) longest time two men have played with an unchanged shirt or without a toilet break!! :P

This is what happens when you get a yankie that can really serve mixed with someone who speaks fluent in French. If you guys remember Younes El Aynoui speaks perfect French and Rod is just self-explanatory.
Just think about the value for money in that match, i'm sure they'd all be sound asleep now!!!

It was a match of great heart and some drama but not great tennis. Both have amazing serves but neither is very good at returning serve. It was happenstance they met and all these records fell. If someone like Rafa or Hewitt or Andy had been playing the match would've been a tad shorter I fancy.
deuce , 6/24/10 7:47 AM
Deuce: As so often I second your thoughts. The drama was all in the fascination of who would blink first: in the early stages the tennis itself was monotonous. The whole tennis world was drawn in by the spectacle of these two facing each other down and as the hours ticked by one marvelled at how they could still pound down 200km serves and hit ace after ace. It was almost as though they had both switched onto auto-pilot when they served.
Towards the end it was agonising to watch the pain etched on Isner's face and just as one was fully expecting him to be stretchered off the court, eh voilà he ran down a ball for another winner.
Unbelievable.
As for Mamut. Words fail me. At 29 some would say this is the twilight of his career but as McEnroe pointed out, on court he looked as though he had just played a couple of sets.
Clayking: I am sure there were some more records set. Looking at the 5th set stats the ratio of winners to unforced errors struck me as extraordinary
Mahut 227/33
Isner 239/28
And only 16 total points won separated them
312 Mahut 296 Isner

Whoever wins this match will possibly meet Rafa in the 4th round and I shudder at the thought of another long drawn out match going into the quarters. But as Rafa would say- one match at a time!
Vamos Rafa! Ooops, wrong thread. :-)
phoenix , 6/24/10 8:35 AM
ed good morning! Yes, we often second guess each other, very comforting say I when, so often on blogs, punters are at each other's throats!
phoenix: whole point of ed's and my post, with Rafa playing the match would've ended far sooner. Have faith!
deuce , 6/24/10 8:45 AM
thanks deuce. sometimes, i got the feeling that atr is playing tricks with my head. :-)
btw, Ricky predicted Mahut to win this match and in 5 sets. he was right with the number of sets, will he be with the winner? i go with Isner though.
phoenix , 6/24/10 8:52 AM
phoenix, the winner still has to get past De Bakker first, in the second round, and then possibly Youzhny in the third round. Do you think this person can get past De Bakker and then Youzhny to meet Rafa in the fourth round?
luckystar , 6/24/10 8:58 AM
Spotted on Eurosport news page:
'Isner could have flown home to Florida in the time it took them to contest the 118 games so far in the final set.'
