American James Blake has hinted after his first-round defeat at Wimbledon that pain from a lingering knee injury could force him to end his career as early as this autumn.
"The knee is not great. If it doesn't get better soon, I'm not sure how much longer I want to play in pain.
"If I'm continuing to play in pain, I'll re-assess after the US Open and see if I want to continue," said the 30-year-old American, once a Top 10 player but now ranked 109. "If I need to, after the Open, I can take the rest of the year off and then see if I can start fresh in 2011.
"It's a bit of an unknown. If my life is gonna change after the Open, then I'll have to be anxious and see what comes next."
Blake, out already for more than two months this season, has been suffering with the problem for 18 months or more, but has refused to ease the troubles with any kind of painkiller.
"I've never taken an anti inflammatory or painkiller in my life. They have asked me to do that; I didn't do that. It's just something I've always stuck to."
The American is weighing his options of possible surgery or other less-invasive forms of treatment in hopes of saving his career.
