While John Isner and Nicolas Mahut continue to plug away at 48-47 in the fifth set, Lleyton Hewitt and Novak Djokovic moved through to the third round.
Lleyton Hewtt def. Evgeny Korolev 6-4, 6-4, 3-0(ret.)
Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt had his second round match firmly in hand when opponent Evgeny Korolev retired with injury. The Aussie came into Wimbledon off a great win on the grass courts of Halle and seems to be continuing his form at the All England Club.
Hewitt donated just 7 errors and smacked 30 winners in the 2 and a half sets played. The Aussie moves into the third round, where he will take on France’s Gael Monfils.
Novak Djokovic def. Taylor Dent 7-6(5), 6-1, 6-4
American serve-and-volleyer Taylor Dent made the first set difficult for Novak Djokovic, but the Serb was finally able to wrest control of the match from Dent in the first set tiebreaker. The Serb took the lead off a Dent unforced error in the tie breaker, and went on to win the first set 7-5.
Dent had a bit of a let-down in the second set. The serve and volley game that served the American so well in the first set, began to break down. Djokovic began to bully Dent from the baseline and sealed a 2 sets to 0 lead.
The Serb continued to play good baseline tennis in the third. Dent put in a good effort to stay with Djokovic, but the world No. 3 was too solid. There was only 1 break point opportunity in the whole set, which Djokovic immediately consolidated on to take the straight set win.
