  • Roddick, Hewitt move through at Wimbledon

    6/22/10 2:09 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick, Hewitt move through at Wimbledon Andy Roddick escaped the difficulties of the other top seeds in his half of the draw. The American cruised past his first round opponent.

Andy Roddick def. Rajeev Ram 6-3, 6-2, 6-2

Unlike fellow top seed Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, Andy Roddick cruised through his opening round match against fellow-American Rajeev Ram. Roddick was in fierce form with his serve; he put in an impressive 73% first serves and hit 13 aces in the three set match.

Ram never made a dent on his compatriot’s serve. The world No. 93 had no chances to break in the match; Roddick rolled through each of his service games with ease. Ram, conversely, faced 11 break points, of which Roddick converted 5.

Roddick will take on tough grass-courter Michael Llodra in the second round.

    Lleyton Hewitt def. Maximo Gonzalez 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2

After a rocky start, Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt righted the ship to defeat Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina. Gonzalez spent the first set hitting Hewitt off the court. The Argentine’s forehand was finding its mark often enough to rattle Hewitt and secure a pair of service breaks.

Once the Aussie figured out how to manage Gonzalez at the baseline, he took complete charge of the match. The last 3 sets of the match featured utter domination from Hewitt. The Aussie went 7 for 7 in break point chances in the three sets he won.

Hewitt faces Evgeny Korolev in the second round.
