(4) Andy Murray def. Jan Hajek 7-5, 6-1, 6-2
World No. 4 Andy Murray is through to round two at Wimbledon with a convincing 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 win over Jan Hajek in the opening round. The Scot held all but one service game to record the victory in one hour and 41 minutes. After a fairly slow start in the first set, Murray settled in to take sets two and three in under an hour. The 23-year-old, who struck 17 aces and 39 winners during the match, extended his Wimbledon record to 15-4.
Murray will face Jarkko Nieminen for a place in the third round. The Finn came through his first-round match against veteran Stefan Koubek, 6-4, 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2.
(18) Sam Querrey def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6(4), 6-3, 2-1 (retired)
Eighteenth seed Sam Querrey earned safe passage into the second round, as opponent Sergiy Stakhovsky retired with stomach illness. The American had fired 10 aces and 21 winners through two completed sets before Stakhovsky, a recent winner at the UNICEF Open, called it a day in game three of the third set.
Querrey is scheduled to meet Ivan Dodig in the next round. The qualifier had little trouble dismissing first-round challenger Oscar Hernandez, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.
