Andy Murray has become a man on a mission as Wimbledon began without a single English competitor anywhere within the 128-strong men's draw.
Only the world No. 4 Scot and compatriot Jamie Baker, a wild card, will be representing Britain at this edition.
"It’s not great, it’s better for me, the more British guys around," said Murray said of the unusual situation. "But it's not really something I want to get involved in.”
Three Brits lost in the second round of qualifying last week at Roehampton. The federation cracked down this year on free distribution of up to eight wild cards to local hopes after years of frustration at a lack of results on the lawns of SW19.
While Murray reached the 2009 semi-finals in his best Wimbledon showing, No. 259 Baker is not expected to make much of an impression.
Murray said that winning the championship might just be the best answer to the decline of the home presence. "I want to look to try and win the tournament, that's my goal. I think that's the best way to go into it."
