  • Defending champion Federer headlines field at Wimbledon

    6/21/10 4:09 AM | Kelli DeMario
Defending champion Federer headlines field at Wimbledon Roger Federer returns to action for the first time since Roland Garros, as he takes the stage as the top seed at the Wimbledon Championships in London. The World No. 2 is bidding for his seventh success at the tournament.

Roger Federer will be looking to add Grand Slam title No. 17 to his resume, as he enters into Wimbledon as the number one seed. The 28-year-old is set to lead a field of talented players, which hosts every member of the top 10, with the exception of an injured Juan Martin Del Potro.

The Swiss commences the tournament with a 27-8 season record, aided most notably by a championship run at the Australian Open. Federer has advanced to the semifinal or better in four additional events, which includes a recent runner-up finish to former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in Halle.

The World No. 2 aims to take a record-tying seventh Wimbledon crown, placing him in a three-way tie with William Renshaw and Pete Sampras. Federer has been nearly unstoppable on grass at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, having won the prestigious title six out of the last seven years. Since 2003, the Swiss suffered his only defeat to World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the 2008 final.

Seeded players located in Federer’s quarter of the draw are: No. 7 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 12 Tomas Berdych, No. 16 Jurgen Melzer, No. 20 Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 22 Feliciano Lopez, No. 30 Tommy Robredo and No. 31 Victor Hanescu.

The closest seed to Federer is Robredo, whom the Swiss would face in the second round. Should the 28-year-old pass through the early rounds, he looks to a possible round of 16 match with either Lopez or Melzer and a likely quarterfinal clash with Tomas Berdych or Nikolay Davydenko.

Federer is slated to open his campaign on Monday, when he squares off against Alejandro Falla.
