  • Davydenko, Berdych highlight opening-day play

    6/21/10 6:20 AM | Kelli DeMario
Davydenko, Berdych highlight opening-day play Wimbledon seeds Nikolay Davydenko and Tomas Berdych will be in first-round action on Monday, as they take on respective opponents Kevin Anderson and Andrey Golubev.

    (7) Nikolay Davydenko vs. Kevin Anderson

World No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko continues his comeback after sustaining a broken left wrist in early spring. The 29-year-old Russian won a round in Halle before falling to Benjamin Becker in the round of 16, 3-6, 4-6. Davydenko enters into his 9th Wimbledon with a 15-4 season record, bolstered by a title-winning run in Doha. The seventh seed has not competed well on the grass, having reached the fourth round only once since his 2002 debut.

World No. 95 Kevin Anderson looks to rebound after an early exit to Dudi Sela in Eastbourne. The 24-year-old South African, who has yet to win a match at Wimbledon, is 5-11 heading into his first meeting with Davydenko.

    Prediction: Davydenko in four sets.

    (12) Tomas Berdych vs. Andrey Golubev

Twelfth seed Tomas Berdych is set to begin the tournament with a solid 30-11 mark for the 2010 season. The World No. 13 makes his return to competition following a semifinal finish at Roland Garros. Berdych has performed well this year, advancing to the quarterfinal or better in seven events. The 24-year-old Czech, who did not participate during the grass-court warm-up tournaments, reached the Wimbledon round of 16 last year (lost to Roddick).

World No. 81 Andrey Golubev will attempt to regroup after suffering back-to-back, first-round losses at Queen’s Club and Eastbourne. The 22-year-old is 7-9 for the season, and remains in search of his first Wimbledon victory.

    Prediction: Berdych in straight sets.
