  • 2009 Finalist Roddick kicks off Wimbledon campaign

    6/21/10 4:14 AM | Cheryl Murray
2009 Finalist Roddick kicks off Wimbledon campaign American Andy Roddick will take on countryman Rajeev Ram in the Wimbledon opening round.

American Andy Roddick will look to win one more match than he did in the 2009 edition at the All-England Club. Roddick went down to Roger Federer 14-16 in the fifth set.

Roddick has had good success on hard courts this year so far. He won the Miami Masters, including a win over Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. His Slam record has been unimpressive, however. The American went out in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open to an inspired Marin Cilic and he had a customary early exit in the third round of the French Open to Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili.

The one glitch in Roddick’s pre-Wimbledon warm-up was his round of 16 exit at Queen’s Club at the hands of Israel’s Dudi Sela.

The No. 5 seed’s first round opponent will be fellow American Rajeev Ram. The 26 year old Ram is ranked 93 in the world; he splits his time between the Challenger tour and the main tour. ATP level wins have been few and far between for Ram, who won a single match on grass (vs. Karol Beck) leading up to the Championships.

This should not be much of a workout for Roddick. The man with the big serve has been a consistent challenger on grass for most of his career; a first-rounder against Ram will ease Roddick into Wimbledon.
