Janko Tipsarevic stops Benjamin Becker's recent hot streak on Friday with a three-set win in 's-Hertogenbosch. Tipsarevic will face Sergiy Stakhivsky for the title.
There will be a new champion in 's-Hertogenbosch, as 2009 winner Benjamin Becker fell to Janko Tipsarevic 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 in semifinal action on Friday. Tipsarevic blasted 15 aces against only one double-fault to advance in two hours and 16 minutes.
In a matchup between the only two seeded players in the last four, a tiebreaker was necessary to decide the first set. After exchanging one break of serve each, Becker won the 'breaker seven points to five for a one-set advantage.
Tipsarevic, however, did not drop serve the entire rest of the way while saving a total of four break points in sets two and three. The 51st-ranked Serb used one break of serve in each of the final two frames to reach his second career ATP final.
Afterward, Tipsarevic offered a reason for his relatively slow start: Serbia's upset win over Germany at the World Cup. "I think it didn’t help me because I was screaming so loud in the locker room and I was feeling in the first few minutes, especially in the warmup. I told myself to focus. 'You’re here to play the semis, not to be happy or sad if Serbia wins in the World Cup.'"
The No. 7 seed will have no such distractions on Sunday when he contests the final against Sergiy Stakhovsky, who dismissed Xavier Malisse 6-3, 6-4. Stakhovsky converted all four of his break-point opportunities to prevail in one hour and six minutes.
