  • Llodra downs Garcia-Lopez for Eastbourne title

    6/19/10 7:18 PM | Kelli DeMario
Llodra downs Garcia-Lopez for Eastbourne title Veteran Michael Llodra captured his second ATP World Tour championship of the season Sunday afternoon, following his straight-set victory over opponent Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

World No. 46 Michael Llodra earned his fifth ATP World Tour title on Sunday with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at the expense of World No. 41 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The 30-year-old Frenchman struck 11 aces and held 10 of 10 service games to seal the win in just 67 minutes. With the championship victory, Llodra snagged his second title on grass, adding to a prior successful run at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2004.

A tight opening set contained no service breaks for either player until 6-5. Llodra took the only break of serve in the 12th game to close at 7-5. The Frenchman passed through the set without facing break point, as he held Garcia-Lopez to a mere 2 points on the return.

After a brief rain delay halted play in the third game of the second set, Llodra took a break lead on a costly double fault from the Spaniard. The Frenchman, who saved both break points he faced in the set, broke serve in the eighth game to complete the match.

"It's always a pleasure to win a title,” said Llodra. “It doesn't happen every week so you have to enjoy it when it happens. It's been a great week and I felt good from the beginning. I know I can play well on grass but you still have to do the job out there on the court. 6-5 in the first set was a great time to break. I knew if I stayed focused I would get my chances and at 6-5 it came my way. Then it helped to serve first in the second set.”

Llodra improved his season record to 16-11. He is scheduled to face American Jesse Witten in round one of the Wimbledon Championships next week.

Good win for Llodra. His game works very well on grass. I hope he has a good Wmbledon. Looking forward to him playing Roddick at Wimbledon. I like his left handed SHBH. I hope one day Rafa can add a SHBH to his game too. Would like to see Rafa using both DHBH and SHBH during his matches, it will be interesting.

what do you mean? rafa to add a single handed backhand to his game??? he has a slice that is not so bad

You know croc, I've seen Rafa hit a SHBH (not the sliced one) during one of his practice and during some hitting sessions with kids. I thought he can hit the SHBH quite well, and with his physical strength, there shouldn't be any problem for him to do so, of course must be with enough practice. Why the necessity to do so, you may ask? Cos I think the way he hits his DHBH, he puts lots of stress on his legs (his knees, his ankles, his feet). If one day, it becomes too much stress for his legs to be able to execute the DHBH, maybe he can consider the SHBH instead. Maybe the next time you watch him play, look carefully at how he hits his DHBH, esp on the run and retrieving, and you can see how much stress he puts on his legs!
