Six-time winner Roger Federer had been handed the top Wimbledon seeding despite standing second in the ATP rankings to Rafael Nadal.
Nadal, who won the title in 2008, will stand second as the All England club committee exercised its right to adjust seedings by proficiency on grass for the Championships.
Three-time finalist Andy Roddick and 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt were given major boosts in the list. Seventh-ranked American Roddick goes up to fifth seed behind No. 3 Novak Djokovic and No. 4 Andy Murray.
Australian Hewitt, winner of the Halle grass title at the weekend over Federer, was boosted from his 26th ranking up to 15th in the seedings. Queen's winner Sam Querrey of the US was seeded 17th from his 21st ranking.

i would love hewitt to go deep in wimbledon(and not be in rafa's quarter)
VAMOS HEWITT!!!
vrael , 6/16/10 4:47 PM
it wont matter !
this year, theres goin to be real tournament.
not like last year, where we witnessed a high class drama in the finals :)
most probably, nadal might do it again.
even though i am a roger fan,but i am sill worried , as nadal is fit and young...
tlebin , 6/16/10 6:09 PM
This is nothing new. Federer was always going to be seeded no.1.
Similar to Sampras?s ranking history which tells you the story of how he accumulated 286 weeks as No. 1. Sampras became No 1 eleven times (i.e. he regained the No. 1 ranking 10 times). Federer will likely break Sampras?s record by becoming No 1 for only a third time (i.e., regain it only two times to break Pete?s record). It?s conceivable that Federer could go on to regain the No. 1 ranking at least a few more times as he desires.

tlebin, remember that roger is also fit and young. dont forget that. I am so looking forward to wimbledon this year.
croc, that isnt the case. Roddick has also moved up from no. 7 to no. 5 and I think there are a few others too.
maxi , 6/16/10 7:07 PM
croc,
here are the rest of the players who have benefited under wimbledon's traditional seeding rules:
Three-time Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick was seeded No. 5, two spots above his ranking.
French Open finalist Robin Soderling is No. 6.
Hewitt became one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Wimbledon seeding committee. The 2002 champion was seeded No. 15 despite a ranking of No. 26.
Big-serving Ivo Karlovic is ranked No. 33 but was bumped up to No. 25 in the seedings.
maxi , 6/16/10 7:10 PM
Only matters for Hewitt. Roddick from 7th to 5th is unimportant as his "level" is in the 5th-8th seed, and will meet a 1st-4th seed if they hold up
SGHIceman , 6/16/10 7:34 PM
Could someone explain to me what is the benefit of being seeded #1 vs #2, if any?
Or more generally, what is the importance of seedings?...........sorry for my lack of knowledge in this regard!
Monalysa , 6/16/10 7:58 PM
maxi - Federer IS NOT YOUNG anymore... he's been called a VETERAN several times already!...........and FIT,,, maybe... but his mindset,,, questionable!
McQ , 6/16/10 7:59 PM
Monalysa, it doesn't matter too much, it's a status symbol because the § 1 & 2 seeds go to the top and bottom of the draw, then 2&4 are drawn to play 1 or 2 in the SF, then the rest are drawn in compartments like 5-8 spread between the top and the bottom draws. At Wimbledon, the top half always play before the bottom half so the bottom half will be paying catch-up round by round, but in the end, the best man will win. Of Rafa's 7 GS titles, I think the only time he was seeded 1 was in OZ. I think Delpo was seeded 5 when he won the USO.
Rafa was seeded 3 in Rome according to the rankings, but it did not stop him winning the title. Sometimes the §2 seed ends up with a better draw than the §1 seed, even the §s 3&4 could get a luckier draw than the §s 1&2.
Rafa doesn't like all this hierachy, so he won't care whether he was seeded 1 or 2.
nadline , 6/16/10 8:14 PM
This is what the Wimbledon referee had to say:
"While the seeding positions of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are reversed from their current rankings, there is no practical effect since they remain the leading seeds in their respective halves of the draw," Wimbledon referee Andrew Jarrett said.

Thank you, Nadline!

Hi Maxi,
Nice to see you back here. Did you see the football match today between Spain and CH. Wished Spania to win this one but it was played on grass not clay!
Remember the team lead by Captain Fernado Hierro with Roul, Enrique and Mantanes all of the last three were withdrawn before completion of the match with score 1-0 in favour of them and then they conceded a goal in the duing momemts of normal time, the extratime produced nothing and there was shootout with none to shoot home. Spain chokes in the world stage in spite of being entetaining.
And you have to be too good to beat a swiss team on grass even though some say grass is for the cows.
Bye!
newfangkc , 6/16/10 8:49 PM
Maxi Darling,
I am not insulting anyone here but a Swiss football team beating mighty Spain calls for some thinking. Did you see the goal scored by Maicon last night- wow out of this world-something like the passing shot between the legs by Rog in the US open last year against Joker.
Would love to see many more in the coming weeks.
newfangkc , 6/16/10 8:57 PM
i was just thinking about how the english snobs in the wimbledon committee was spending meeting after meeting drinking scotch, discussing fox hunt and deciding on seedings that won't have any practical effect on the draw...
croc , 6/16/10 9:58 PM
croc, u made me laugh and I happen to agree with your sub-text here, but players just LOVE all that Wimbledon tradition. I remember Tracy Austin saying she was sad players didn't curtsey to the Royal Box any more!! Crikey!!
deuce , 6/17/10 7:12 AM
If the basis of Wimbledon seeding is the past performance, then Roger, Rafa and A-Rod should be seeded 1,2 & 3 respectively because for the past 7 years, only these 3 players managed to play in the finals. A-Rod reached the finals last year so still the perfomance based seeding is skewed, he should be #3.
Raindrops , 6/17/10 7:13 AM
Even I thought Rod will be 4th seed as
1. Federer
2. Nadal
3.Murray(Home Support)
4.Roddick
This is just to make these players dont play eachother till semis. Now lets see how the draw comes up.It will be interesting to see who will play Rod in quarters.
champ00289 , 6/17/10 10:51 AM
and of course, Fed gets to play first (top draw). So when the rain comes it'll be Rafa as usual who'll most likely end up playing consecutive days.. *sarcastic 'yeiiihhh'...
Shireling , 6/17/10 2:15 PM
ok ok there are so many confusions and misconceptions in here so let me try to clear them out.
@shireling...whether fed is on the tpo half or not he is gona play on monday becoz wimb has a tradition of puting up the defending champ up on the centre court to open proceedings.and why worry abt rain when we have a roof now.
@everyone....hehe..too much controversy abt the seedings and thoso who think fed will be seeded 1 no matter what happens are mistaken...fed was seeded 1 becoz rafa didnt play last year..wimb has a method (a mathematical formula) according to which roger has edged out rafa and the diff isnt much ..main reason of the diff is rafa;s absence last year... similarly for all players it is same, it is that formula that puts them in the order we see. cheers
vamosrafa , 6/17/10 2:47 PM
Why don't you all visit the atp website to find out about the seeding procedures. It is not random, or by discretion of the Wimbledon committee. There is a certain formula that they followed in arriving at the seedings.
