Tommy Robredo and Marcos Baghdatis lose their opening matches in 's-Hertogenbosch on Wednesday. Robredo falls to Simon Greul and Baghdatis goes down to Peter Luczak.
A day of upsets at the UNICEF Open was highlighted by Simon Greul's 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tommy Robredo. Greul prevailed in one hour and two minutes to set up a quarterfinal meeting with No. 8 seed Benjamin Becker.
Now a disappointing 9-11 for his 2010 campaign, Robredo was utterly lost in the first set. He won only eight total points and not one on return; yes, Greul held all four of his service games at love, winning 16 of 16 service points. The third-seeded Spaniard earned three break chances in the second, but he missed all of them so one break was enough for Greul to serve out the match at 5-4.
The 67th-ranked German won 30 of 34 first-serve points and won more than half of his return points when he got a look at second serves. Becker, meanwhile, booked his spot in the all-German quarterfinal clash by hammering wild card Henri Kontinen 6-2, 6-1 in a mere 45 minutes.
With Ivan Ljubicic having already bowed out in the first round on Tuesday, Marcos Baghdatis and Viktor Troicki completed the sweep of the four players with first-round byes losing their 's-Hertogenbosch openers. Baghdatis was taken out 7-5, 6-1 by Peter Luczak and Troicki succumbed to Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 6-4.
Next up for Luczak is Janko Tipsarevic, who got past Arnaud Clement 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Giraldo, who saved all seven of the break points he faced while capitalizing on eight Troicki double-faults, will battle Sergiy Stakhovsky for a place in the semis.
