Janko Tipsarevic beats Jeremy Chardy on Tuesday in 's-Hertogenbosch. Ivan Ljubicic's grass-court season, however, gets off to a slow start as he loses to Alejandro Falla.
Janko Tipsarevic put on a stellar serving display to defeat Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the UNICEF Open on Tuesday. Tipsarevic needed just one hour and one minute to book a second-round meeting with Arnaud Clement.
The 51st-ranked Serb fired seven aces, did not double-fault a single time, and was never broken. He faced no break points in the first set before serving it out at 5-3 and he fought off one break point in the second on the way to finishing off the proceedings at 5-4.
"I haven’t played many tournaments and went to Roland Garros with one day of practice," said the No. 7 seed, who recent dealt with both broken ribs and sickness. "I need matches. I need to hear 'Game, set, match Tipsarevic' again and I am going to play a lot after Wimbledon in Davis Cup, at Atlanta, Los Angeles and Washington."
Ivan Ljubicic has plenty of time to think about Wimbledon now, because he fell to Alejandro Falla 6-2, 7-6(6) in second-round action. Playing his opener following a first-round bye, the No. 1 seed went down in one hour and 38 minutes.
Falla prevailed despite striking no aces and double-faulting six times, while Ljubicic cracked 12 aces against three doubles. Ljubicic blasted 10 aces in the second set alone, but Falla was too good on the big points in the tiebreaker and the underdog Colombian moved through to a quarterfinal clash with Xavier Malisse.
