    Eastbourne - Almagro advances, Lopez retires Nicolas Almagro is through to the round of 16 at the AEGON International, following his straight-sets success over Lukasz Kubot. Fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez retired during his opener with wildcard James Ward.

    Top seed Nicolas Almagro made a strong start to the week, as he took out Lukasz Kubot in straight sets Tuesday evening. The Spaniard struck eight aces and converted three of 6 break points en route to a 7-5, 7-6(3) win in one hour and 40 minutes. Almagro trailed by a break at 5-6 in the second set, but fought back to force a tie-break. After giving away mini-break lead, the top seed captured the next four of 5 points to seal the match.

    Almagro meets Denis Istomin for a place in the quarterfinal. Istomin crushed Eduardo Schwank in the opening round, 6-0, 6-3 in just 57 minutes.

    (WC) James Ward def. (2) Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 5-4 (retired)

    World No. 342 James Ward is through to the round of 16, following the retirement of first-round opponent Feliciano Lopez. After missing a match point opportunity at 5-3, the wildcard prepared to close the contest in the 10th game. The Spaniard called it a day at the 74-minute mark, citing a shoulder injury.

    Ward will take on veteran Rainer Schuettler in the next round. The German dismissed Andrey Golubev in the first round, 6-2, 6-3.
