Eastbourne - Simon captures first win of the season Former world No. 6 Gilles Simon recorded his first victory of the year early Monday, after taking out Evgeny Korolev in straight sets. The Frenchman is joined in round two by compatriot Julien Benneteau, who defeated James Blake.

    (3) Gilles Simon def. Evgeny Korolev 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3

Third seed Gilles Simon made a successful return to competition Monday afternoon, battling through to a two-hour and 10-minute, first-round win over Evgeny Korolev. The Frenchman, forced out of action for months with a knee injury, rallied multiple times in the match. After missing match point at 6-5 in the second, Simon fell behind 1-3 in the deciding set. The 25-year-old went on to snag five consecutive games to seal the victory.

Simon faces qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov in the next round. The Russian came through his opener against fellow qualifier Kei Nishikori, who retired midway through the second set.

    (4) Julien Benneteau def. James Blake 7-6(3), 7-5

Fourth seed Julien Bennteau downed James Blake 7-6(3), 7-5 late Monday. The American, falling to 8-8 for the 2010 season, was bidding for his first win since the Sony Ericsson Open in March. Benneteau pocketed two key breaks of serve in the second set, cementing the victory in one hour and 36 minutes.

The Frenchman will square off against Illya Marchenko in the round of 16. Marchenko upended Andreas Seppi in round one, 6-4, 6-4.
