  • 's-Hertogenbosch provides final Wimbledon tuneup

    6/14/10 1:20 AM | Ricky Dimon
's-Hertogenbosch provides final Wimbledon tuneup With Wimbledon just one week away, players will be looking to fine-tune their games in time for the season's third Grand Slam. Among those in 's-Hertogenbosch are Ivan Ljubicic, Marcos Baghdatis, Tommy Robredo, and Philipp Petzschner.

Wimbledon is just one week away, and that means most of the top players are resting. In fact, not one Top 10 player is in action this week. While the UNICEF Open struggled to lure marquee names into its field, the title will be completely up for grabs.

Ivan Ljubicic headlines the tournament as the No. 1 seed. He will be challenged by seeded players (in order 2-8) Marcos Baghdatis, Tommy Robredo, Viktor Troicki, Philipp Petzschner, Thiemo De Bakker, Janko Tipsarevic, and Benjamin Becker.

Petzschner and Becker are coming off semifinal performances at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. Roger Federer took out Petzschner in two tight sets and eventual champion Lleyton Hewitt outlasted Becker in three. Becker and Robredo would square off in the quarterfinals if both men make it that far, while Petzschner is in the top quarter of the draw with Ljubicic.

A tough bottom section of the bracket features Baghdatis, Tipsarevic, Jeremy Chardy, and Arnaud Clement. Tipsarevic and Chardy will do battle in a difficult first-round matchup, with the winner likely to face Clement for a spot in the quarterfinals. Baghdatis--who has a first-round bye along with the other Top 4 seeds--will open against Peter Luczak, who got past Michael Russell in two tiebreakers.

Unseeded threats to watch include Xavier Malisse, Santiago Giraldo, Jarkko Nieminen, and Dustin Brown. Marco Chiudinelli and Robin Haase are already out.

I'd like to see Chardy or Petzschner or De Bakker break through at Wimbledon, but I won't be holding my breath.

After the upsets of marquee names in recent tournaments their absence wont be greatly missed! There should be some good quality matches this week and an interesting insight into who is going to be a threat in the following fortnight.
