Surprise semifinalists Feliciano Lopez and Mardy Fish will face off in the second match of the day at the AEGON Championships. The winner earns the chance to play for the title against Sam Querrey or Rainer Schuettler.
Eighth seed Feliciano Lopez will be looking to break a 2-2 head-to-head series tie with semifinal opponent Mardy Fish. The two last met at the 2010 Masters 1000 Miami, where a round of 32 clash went to the American in straight sets. Fish won their only previous meeting on grass, having secured a 6-1, 6-4, round of 16 victory at the 2009 Queen’s Club tournament.
Lopez reached the last four after upsetting top-seeded compatriot Rafael Nadal on Friday. The Spaniard struck 12 aces en route to a quarterfinal-round triumph in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4. Lopez came through the early rounds in straight sets as well, taking out both wildcard Grigor Dimitrov and 9th seed Julien Benneteau with little difficulty.
The World No. 31 is 18-11 for the season, bolstered by his run to the Johannesburg title in February. Lopez, who debuted at the event in 2006, will make his first Queen’s Club semifinal appearance on Saturday.
World No. 90 Mardy Fish is through to his third ATP World Tour semifinal of the year, adding to prior successes in Sydney and Delray Beach. The 28-year-old American made headlines after upending defending champion Andy Murray in the round of 16. Fish followed with a straight-set win over 12th seed Michael Llodra, 6-4, 6-4.
With the quarterfinal victory, the Tampa native improved his 2010 record to 16-9. Saturday signals his first showing in a Queen’s Club semifinal.
Prediction: Fish for the win in a very tight match.
