Lleyton Hewitt comes back from a set deficit to defeat Benjamin Becker on Saturday in Halle. Next up for Hewitt--with the title at stake--is familiar foe Roger Federer.
Germany had five of the eight quarterfinalists and two of the semifinalists at the Gerry Weber Open, but the home fans will not see one of their own win the title.
Prior to Philipp Petzschner getting edged by Roger Federer in straight sets, Benjamin Becker lost a close one to Lleyton Hewitt 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. Hewitt needed two hours and 23 minutes to set up a 25th meeting with Federer.
Before Hewitt pulled away in the third, sets one and two were mostly serving contests. Neither man could break serve in the opening frame of play, with Hewitt facing no break points and Becker saving one at 5-5. The German seized the first mini-break in the tiebreaker for a 2-1 lead, extended the advantage to 4-1, and closed it out at 6-4 with a winning backhand.
Hewitt looked poised to force a third set when he earned the match's first break at 4-3 in the second. Suddenly, however, Becker struck for the first time and got right back on serve. Two games later, another 'breaker was necessary. This time it was Hewitt's turn to cruise and he settled a 3-3 tie by winning the final four points.
From there it was all over for Becker. The world No. 52 dropped serve in the opening game of the third and missed all three of his break chances to get back in the match. Hewitt added another break for 5-2 and served out the proceedings one game later, converting his first match point when Becker netted a backhand.
"It’s nice anytime I’m playing any kind of final," said the 32nd-ranked Aussie, who wrapped up his effort with 13 aces against Becker's 20. "Obviously the big picture is in a week's time in Wimbledon and wanting to do the right things for there."
